Spannungsfeld D

Spannungsfeld D_englischThe sub-projects of Spannungsfeld D intend to investigate the categories that were decisive for contemporaries' assessment of power and domination. The central issue is thus the ideal criteria on the basis of which power and domination were exercised, recognised or challenged. These include forms of self-representation in the court's productions or in panegyric texts. But the ideal can also be brought to the ruler from outside, as in profane mural painting. If the ruler does not live up to this ideal, the step to criticising the ruler is not far off, as in medieval Kashmir. The intentions associated with this can be quite different: Usually such criticism is meant to destabilise power and domination, but channelled criticism can also lead to stabilisation, as in the case of China in the early imperial period. Common to all forms of criticism and idealisation is that they interact with the experiential forms of power and domination.
