Sub-Project Becher/Dohmen

Consensus and fidelitas. Personal and transpersonal elements of royal Macht and Herrschaft in the East Frankish-German realm

The sub-project examines the mutual dependency between ruler and elites in the East Frankish-German realm from the Treaty of Verdun (843) to the reign of Henry III (1039–1056) and, thus, aims to sharpen the research concept of ‘konsensuale Herrschaft’. The study draws on a broad spectrum of sources, mainly historiographical texts and charters, focussing on the decision-making process in general and in particular on such processes that led to concrete royal decisions, i.e. on war and peace, donations or offices.
