Sub-Project Bemmann

Steppe empires in Inner Asia in a comparative perspective – Protection and practice of Herrschaft as documented in monuments and written sources

Since the first steppe empire in Inner Asia was founded by the Xiongnu under their ruler Maodun in 209 BCE, several empires were established in this region. They differ in their extension and the duration of their existence. The aim of this sub-project is to analyse the manifestation of Macht and Herrschaft of the steppe empires in Mongolia using mainly the archaeological record because the written sources hardly give any clue about this topic. The methodical approach I apply is the intensive, diachronically comparative study on the basis of primary data of one region. The sub-project will focus on the Xiongnu, Türk, Uyghur, Kitan and Mongol empires.
