Local practice of Herrschaft in the rural areas of the Lower Rhine region from late antiquity to the high Middle Ages

Due to the lack of central administrative structures, Herrschaft in rural medieval space was mainly exercised by local elites. On the basis of written sources it is hardly possible to gain detailed insights into local structures of Macht and Herrschaft in the Rhineland before the Late Middle Ages. However, the methods of landscape archaeology offer the opportunity to complement this fragmentary knowledge with a diachronic and spatial perspective.
