Samoderzhcy i edinoderzhaviye: Creating the demand for centralist autocratic Herrschaft in the “time of troubles”: the Russian tsars, with special regard to the election and appointment procedures of Boris Godunov and Michail Romanov

At the beginning of the official Russian historiography in the 19th century stands the narrative of an intelligent, courageous and in every respect worthy ruler by the grace of God (russ.: pomazannik Bozhiy) respectively a “goodhearted Little Father Tsar” (russ.: tsar’-batyushka). This project deals with the historical origins of this specific form of unconditional recognition of the Russian ruling dynasty and its autocratic government, whose foundations date back to the so called “time of troubles” (russ.: smuta or smutnoye vremya, 1598–1613).
