Sub-Project Morenz

The two bodies of Horus. Royal ideology and its manifestation in the formative period of Egyptian kingship

The 4th and early 3rd millennium can be considered the formative period of ancient Egyptian history. New research agendas as well as spectacular archaeological findings from Hieraconpolis, Abydos and other places allow a better and deeper understanding of early Egyptian mentality and royal ideology in particular. This sub-project examines the sacro-political concepts and patterns of Macht and Herrschaft resulting in a very new type of state extended over a large territory. Thus we can expect new insights into the development of discourses, strategies to shape hierarchies and the development of cultural technologies (such as the origin and the development of writing) but also the discovery and evaluation of basic historical facts.
