Sub-Project Schwieger

Centre or periphery: Herrschaft between imaginary and real order in Tibetan societies exemplified through the Namgyal dynasty of Ladakh (16th–19th Century)

While basic studies concerning the political and cultural history of Ladakh, its monasticism and rich corpus of charters, muniments and social documents are available, a comprehensive examination of the Ladakhi kingdom as a form of Herrschaft is still a desideratum. To conduct such a research is the aim of this sub-project. By examining a series of sub-questions, in particular the policies of the kings of Ladakh to stabilise their Herrschaft will be revealed. The results will be presented in a transcultural perspective.
