Sub-Project Taranczewski/Schley

Reproduction of elites through delegation and differentiation of royal Herrschaft in medieval Japan

This sub-project aims at disentangling the institution of kingship from its fixation on the position of a tennô. Analysing kingship in a period of its functional and institutional differentiation in early medieval Japan (11th–14th century) and focussing on concrete practices of Herrschaft – especially on the fields of military and of agricultural policies – in its interaction with the development of structures of Macht and Herrschaft in Japan seems a promising approach. Not only kingship in its narrower sense, but also the elites surrounding and supporting it, their actions and interactions will be considered in order to understand the functioning of Macht and Herrschaft as a whole.
